Strictly speaking, "ad tech" could refer to any technology used in marketing. In practice, however, the term typically refers to software companies in digital advertising that liaison between advertising agencies and digital publishers. Ad networks are perhaps the most prevalent type of ad tech company in this sense of the term.
A less-frequently used variation of the phrase encompasses additional types of technology such as campaign management platforms, CRMs, and other specialized vendors.
